“Sometimes you’re allowed to give up on someone so you can grow up. It’s the only way you can make room for someone else .”

Fan.girl (noun)

1. (derogatory) a female fan, obsessed with something (or someone) to a frightening or sickening degree. Often considered ditzy, annoying and shallow.
2. (playful, good-natured) less extreme, a female fan who can laugh at their own passion for their particular interest (or even obsession).

This is the story of a girl named “Summer”. It was all started in her freshman year in college when she met the front man of her fave band “Violet Reaction”. a half-Filipino boy named Scotty Carlton who happened to be his schoolmate. The two became friends, then suddenly Summer’s fangirling turned into something deep, expectations that she wasn’t sure of, if things are going right as what she wished would changed her life.

Written by Marla Miniano, published by Summit Books, Fan Girl is a great novel that would really fits the interests of teenagers nowadays. Like most of the teenage girls of this generation who were really great fans of famous boy bands and cute celebrities; girls who are willing to do everything just to keep in touch with their idols. And I must say that I am also one of them. Out of my curiosity of the title , I was able to gain interest in reading the book. This is my first time to read a book authored by Marla Miniano, tho I already knew her long time already because I am also an avid reader of Candy Magazine. Ms. Marla did well with this book. Some details were realistic that mostly happened in the lives of young girls (I mean, the fangirling part). As I was reading, I also realized and learned lessons from the story.“Why do you need something or someone else to change your life? Why can’t you do it yourself?” Words like these from Mr. Brooks made me ponder my thoughts and came to realize that I can also apply this in real life. So girls out there, how much can you do being a fangirl? Be ready to put yourselves in Summer’s shoes and find out if you’d also go that far the same thing as what she did in dealing with Scott, with those tough situations which had involve decision making that has greatly affect her life. Although I wasn’t expecting the ending to be just the way it is, still I assume you that this book is a good read. :)

“When you’re desperate, it is easy to blindly, recklessly throw your hopes out into the open; to rely on luck when there is nothing else to rely on. It is easy to risk failure, really, when you don’t even know what to measure your life against anymore.” ~Summer
